January 6 Sentencing Is An Attempt To Chill Free Speech
“...consequences are abundantly clear to anyone who might be unhappy with the results of 2024, 2028, 2032 or any future election for as long as this case is remembered.”
-U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly at Enrique Tarrio’s sentencing
Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison last week - the longest sentence given for January 6. The mind-boggling part - Tarrio wasn’t even at the capitol on January 6. He was arrested on unrelated charges a few days before and watched the so-called insurrection unfold on TV.
Nevertheless, Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Mulroe said that Tarrio was “unique among his co-defendants in the extent of his toxic influence over others.”
Tarrio received a terrorism enhancement to his sentence. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said Tarrio fit the criteria because the crime “was calculated to influence or affect the conduct of government by intimidation or coercion, or to retaliate against government conduct.”
But here is where things get interesting… and reveal the real intent behind the DOJ.
The judge said a long sentence was needed to deter future political violence, repeating the refrain “It can’t happen again.”
The prosecutor enabled this sentiment, saying that “consequences are abundantly clear to anyone who might be unhappy with the results of 2024, 2028, 2032 or any future election for as long as this case is remembered.”
And there we have it - future elections. This was all designed to chill free speech. Forget your right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The powers that be aren’t scared of these guys nor find them a threat. It’s about you. They want you too scared to stand up and question your government.
January 6 was a glorified breaking and entering. Thanks to a corrupt criminal justice system and an overly polarized nation, hundreds of people will lose years of their lives.
And if January 6 was terrorism, what were all the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020? Oh, those don’t count because violence and protests on the left are justified.
Police stations and cars getting burned to the ground and private businesses being looted? Anything in the name of BLM. Richard Barnett kicking his feet up on Speaker Pelosi’s desk, that’s a crime against humanity. Hide the kids and then give them 4.5 years in prison.
America - the land of the imprisoned, home of the corrupt.
At his sentencing, Tarrio apologized for his actions and said he was “done with politics.” He may believe that, but for millions of Americans, he is a political prisoner.
While these lengthy sentences are attention-grabbing, there are many more who languish in jail cells and await trial. More than 1,100 people have been charged in connection with the capitol protest, including more than 400 people who have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.
